Mikhail V. Lomonosov (1711-1765) was one of the central figures of 18th-century Russian science and culture. A polymath, scholar, and writer, he made important contributions to chemistry, physics, mineralogy, history, and philology, and played a major role in the development of education and academic life in the Russian Empire. His name is especially associated with the foundation of Moscow University, which later became one of the leading educational institutions of Russia.
