In the Russian Empire, tin-lead alloy tokens were primarily produced for collectors and educational use. The soft metal reduced wear on dies, making it ideal for limited or repeat strikes, while also lowering production costs. These tokens were well-suited for study collections and displays, and offered collectors a more affordable way to acquire rare types with preserved visual and historical detail.

The coronation of Peter II took place in Moscow on 25 February 1728 in the Assumption Cathedral of the Moscow Kremlin. As the grandson of Peter I, he ascended the throne at a young age following the death of Catherine I, and the ceremony formally affirmed his authority as emperor. The return of the court to Moscow for the coronation marked a departure from the St. Petersburg-centered rule established by Peter the Great and emphasized continuity with older Muscovite traditions. The event reflected the influence of the old aristocracy at court and symbolized a shift in political balance during the early phase of his reign.
