Struck to commemorate one of the most remarkable equestrian statues of 19th-century Europe — the monument to Emperor Nicholas I on St. Isaac’s Square in St. Petersburg. Unveiled in 1859, the monument was designed by architect Auguste de Montferrand and sculpted by Peter Clodt von Jürgensburg, famed for his mastery of equestrian form. The statue depicts the emperor mounted on a rearing horse, supported solely on its two rear legs - a daring engineering feat for its time.
The pedestal is adorned with allegorical female figures representing Strength, Wisdom, Faith, and Justice, as well as detailed reliefs depicting scenes from Nicholas I’s reign. The monument stands as a bold statement of autocracy and architectural grandeur, and remains a landmark of the imperial capital.
A coin that celebrates not only an emperor, but a singular achievement of Russian monumental art.
