The Russian East-Asian Steamship Company (1899–1918) was established in St. Petersburg as the first subsidiary of the Danish East Asian Company formed two years earlier. The company owned a fleet of modern steamships that regularly operated on passenger lines, transported cargo, and carried sea mail. In 1900, the Russian East-Asian Society launched regular passenger service on the transatlantic "Russian-American Line". From 1906 to 1915, this line serviced the route: Libava (modern Latvia) — Rotterdam — New York (sometimes stopping in Copenhagen and Halifax).
