(Made king in 1705 during the Swedish upheaval; Augustus II having yielded and then been restored; after that obstacle was removed, elected unanimously in 1733; yielding to force, by the Treaty of Vienna in 1736 he obtained Lorraine; a philosopher and benefactor, ever mindful of his fatherland; burned by accidental flames; died at Lunéville in 1766, on 23 February, aged 89).

Stanislaus I Leszczyński (1677-1766) was King of Poland and Grand Duke of Lithuania, first elevated during the Great Northern War with Swedish support. After losing the Polish throne, he was again elected in 1733, but under pressure connected with the War of the Polish Succession he renounced the crown and received Lorraine, now in France, under the Treaty of Vienna. He spent his later years at Lunéville in France, where he became known as a philosopher and benefactor, and died there after suffering severe burns from an accidental fire.
