The Tauride Mint in Feodosia (marked “ТМ”) operated briefly in 1787-1788 following the incorporation of the Crimean Khanate into the Russian Empire. Established on the initiative of Prince Grigory Potemkin, it was created by modernizing the former ханский mint in Kaffa (Feodosia), continuing local coin production under imperial authority.
The mint primarily struck copper coins of 5 and 2 kopeks, including issues overstruck on earlier “cross” 5 kopeks, reflecting broader monetary reforms of the period. Production was limited due to shortages of raw materials, labor, and logistical constraints, and output remained significantly lower than at major imperial mints.
With the outbreak of the Russo-Turkish War in 1787, operations were suspended and the equipment evacuated inland. The mint never resumed activity.
