Augustus II the Strong (1670-1733), Elector of Saxony and King of Poland, played a major role in the Great Northern War, during which he entered into alliance with Tsar Peter I of Russia against Sweden. His temporary loss of the Polish throne followed the victories of Charles XII, but after the Swedish defeat at Poltava he was restored to power with decisive Russian support, marking the growing influence of Russia in the affairs of the Polish Lithuanian Commonwealth.
