In the 1920s and 1930s, the Aizsargi were one of the main paramilitary organizations of Latvia. Originally formed in 1919 as a rural self-defense force, they were reorganized in 1921 as a voluntary organization. In peacetime they operated under the Ministry of the Interior, while in wartime they were intended to serve as a militia under military command.
Their functions included assisting the police, patrolling roads and border areas, and maintaining public order, while at the same time providing military-style training to their members. During the 1920s and 1930s the organization expanded into a nationwide structure with regiments, uniforms, and regular field exercises. By the early 1930s it had become an important patriotic and state-supported force in Latvian public life.
In essence, the Aizsargi of this period functioned as a Latvian national guard, combining internal security duties with readiness for national defense. The organization was dissolved only after the Soviet occupation of Latvia in 1940.
