The medal commemorates the transport of the colossal granite monolith, later used as the base of the Monument to Peter the Great in St. Petersburg, known as the Bronze Horseman. The block, weighing over 1,500 tons, was moved from the village of Lakhta to the Neva embankment under the supervision of the engineer Marin Carburis, using an ingenious system of rollers and levers. This feat of engineering, unprecedented in 18th-century Europe, was celebrated by Catherine II as a symbol of human determination and the enduring link between her reign and that of Peter the Great.
