The Polish Uprising, also known as the November Uprising, began in Warsaw on November 29, 1830, as a rebellion against the authority of the Russian Empire in the Kingdom of Poland, which had been established after the Congress of Vienna in 1815.
Led primarily by young officers, students, and members of the Polish nobility, the insurgents sought to restore Poland’s independence and the constitutional order granted in 1815. The uprising was eventually crushed by Russian forces under Field Marshal Ivan Paskevich, and Warsaw fell in September 1831.
Following the defeat, the Kingdom of Poland lost its remaining autonomy; its army was dissolved, and thousands of participants fled into exile in Western Europe — an event known as the Great Emigration of Polish patriots and intellectuals.
