The Battle of Poltava, fought on 27 June 1709, was a decisive victory for Russia in the Great Northern War. It ended Sweden’s status as a major power and marked the emergence of the Russian Empire as a dominant force in Eastern Europe. Peter I personally commanded the Russian forces, which overcame the Swedish army under Charles XII. The battle not only reversed the course of the war, but also had far-reaching consequences for the balance of power in Europe. The medal commemorates this triumph, with a dynamic depiction of the battle and a formal portrait of the Tsar as military leader and victor.
