The Order of the Estonian Red Cross was established by the Estonian Red Cross Society in 1920 to recognize humanitarian service in the fields of public health and social services, as well as personal devotion to saving lives. Initially awarded in a single grade until 1925, it expanded to five grades until 1936. In 1936, it was formally recognized as a national award by the Estonian Parliament through the Decorations Act, with the addition of three medals. However, during the Soviet occupation, the order was suspended, only to be reinstated in 1994 after the restoration of Estonian independence.
This prestigious order is conferred upon individuals for their outstanding contributions to humanitarian efforts and may also be awarded posthumously. The reverse inscription on the order translates to "Estonian Red Cross." Today, it is awarded in six grades, symbolizing the enduring legacy of service and compassion upheld by the Estonian Red Cross.
