Monnayes Russes 1547-1855, Par le General T.F. de Schubert. Atlas 1857 - Plates - full set.

Monnayes Russes des derniers trois Siècles, depuis le Czar Joan Wasiliewicz Groznyi jusqu´à LÉmpereur Alexandre II. 1547-1855. Par le General T.F. de Schubert. ATLAS. Leipsig 1857. Ernst Schäfer, Libraire-Editeur.

"Schubert, T. F. de. Russian Coins of the Last Three Centuries, From Czar Ivan Vasilievich Groznyi to Emperor Alexander II. 1547-1855. Leipzig, 1857. This volume contains the plate atlas only. It is in an oblong folio format with the title printed in gilt against a blue background. The book features an engraved plate of edge designs and legends, along with 36 exquisitely crafted embossed color plates showcasing the obverse and reverse of over 1000 coins, all delicately tinted with metallic hues.  While there is some minor wear to the extremities, overall, this is a splendidly produced work in excellent condition. A rare and highly sought-after volume. The coin images featured in this book are uniformly vibrant and sharply detailed, serving as astonishingly accurate reproductions of the actual coins. The plates in this particular copy are no exception and fortunately, they are also exceptionally well-preserved. According to Randolph Zander, writing in the Russian Numismatic Journal, "A notable, if not entirely practical, aspect of the 1857 catalogue is the bound atlas... The plates display 2144 embossed images depicting the obverse and reverse of the 1072 major numbered types listed in the catalogue.

The raised relief images were created on Congreve's Press using clichés made from galvano copies of the coins, many of which were sourced from collections other than Schubert's to ensure the best representation of each type. The compilation of these images was a significant undertaking in its own right. This method of illustration, of which Schubert's atlas was an early example, was quite fashionable at the time... Given Schubert's meticulous selection process for the specimens featured, the overall visual impact of each folio page, adorned with superbly embossed and metal-colored illustrations, is undeniably impressive.
