Clementina Sobieska was a Polish princess and granddaughter of King John III Sobieski of Poland, the victor of Vienna in 1683. Her marriage to James Francis Edward Stuart, the Jacobite claimant to the English, Scottish, and Irish thrones, gave the Stuart cause an important dynastic and Catholic alliance. Through Clementina, the exiled Stuart court was connected with one of the most prestigious royal families of Poland, adding political and symbolic weight to James’s claim.
