(Prince of Transylvania, husband of Queen Anna Jagiellon; elected king on 15 December 1575, crowned the following year on 30 May; he compelled the people of Gdańsk to obedience, restored Polotsk, Vitebsk, and Livonia to the Commonwealth by arms, re-established the tribunals, founded the Academy of Vilnius; just, energetic, learned; taken by untimely death at Grodno in 1586, aged 54, in the 11th year of his reign, on 12 December). 

Stephen Báthory (1533-1586), Prince of Transylvania, now in Romania, became King of Poland and Grand Duke of Lithuania after his election in 1575 and marriage to Anna Jagiellon. He strengthened the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, now chiefly Poland, Lithuania, Belarus, Latvia and parts of Ukraine, through military successes against Muscovy and important internal reforms, including the re-establishment of the tribunals and the elevation of the Academy of Vilnius, now in Lithuania. He died at Grodno, now in Belarus.
