This medal commemorates the general assembly of the Hungarian Mining and Metallurgical Association held in Rimaszombat (today Rimavská Sobota, Slovakia) in 1897. At the time, the region was an important center of mining and metallurgical activity within the Kingdom of Hungary. The imagery of the miner and industrial landscape reflects the significance of resource extraction and heavy industry in the late 19th-century economy of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, as well as the institutional organization of professional and technical communities.

Issue of interest to collectors of medals of Hungary and Slovakia, struck in the area of modern Slovakia (Kremnica), historically associated with the Austro-Hungarian Empire under Franz Joseph I.
