(Gorilla Bobby, 10 years old, weight 262 kg = 524 lb, Zoological Garden Berlin, 1935).
Bobby was a male western lowland gorilla who became one of the most famous animals of the Zoological Garden in Berlin. He arrived at the zoo in 1928 at approximately two years of age and was the first gorilla ever kept there. Over the following years he became a major attraction and a symbol of the Berlin Zoo, drawing widespread public attention.
Bobby died in 1935 at the age of ten. His memory was preserved through publications, commemorative objects, and a sculptural monument in Berlin. The medal reflects the remarkable popularity he enjoyed during his lifetime and the public impact of his death.
