The Soviet Merchant Fleet traced its institutional origin to the early post-revolutionary years, and by 1984 its 60th anniversary marked six decades of the USSR’s organized civilian maritime shipping system. During that period, the fleet played a major role in transporting cargo and passengers across the Soviet Union and abroad, supporting foreign trade, supplying remote ports, and linking the country with international sea routes. By the late Soviet period, the merchant fleet had become an important element of the national economy and of the USSR’s global commercial presence.
