Karl XIV Johan (1763-1844), formerly Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte, died on March 8, 1844 after a reign that established the Bernadotte dynasty and stabilized Sweden following the Napoleonic Wars. His remains were interred at Riddarholmen Church in Stockholm, the traditional burial site of Swedish monarchs.
