Elias Lönnrot (1802–1884) was a Finnish physician, philologist, and collector of oral poetry, best known as the compiler of the Finnish national epic Kalevala. Between 1828 and 1842, he made several expeditions across rural Finland and Karelia, collecting traditional folk poems and songs. His work culminated in the publication of Kalevala in 1835 (revised in 1849), which became a cornerstone of Finnish cultural identity and national awakening during the period of Russian imperial rule. This medal was struck in 1902 to commemorate the centenary of his birth and enduring cultural legacy.
