This medal was struck to commemorate King Karl XII’s prolonged stay in Ottoman Bender following the Swedish defeat at Poltava. The peaceful image of the sleeping lion symbolically reflects the king's forced political inactivity while in exile. Created by Christian Wermuth, this delicately composed piece remains one of the most poetic and sought-after medals of the post-Poltava period.
