Roman Imperatorial (Travelling Military Mint) AR Denarius, April-August 49 BC – Julius Caesar (49-44 BC) - NGC Ch AU

Strike 4/5, Surface 5/5. An outstanding example of this well-recognized classical Julius Caesar coin, featuring exceptional relief details. The elephant motif is very well struck with a perfect surface, retaining its original mint luster and accented by elegant, thin toning. Very rare.

Obv.: Elephant advancing right, trampling horned serpent; in exergue, “CAESAR”.

Rev.: Priestly implements: simpulum, aspergillum, securis, and apex – emblems of the pontificate.

Crawford 443/1; CRI 9; Sydenham 1006; RSC 49; RBW 1557.

This issue was necessary to pay Caesar's military forces after crossing the Rubicon River, until the battle of Pharsalus.
