This intriguing issue of emergency coins hails from a tumultuous period in Livonian history. During the mid-16th century, Livonia, a remnant of the Teutonic Order's lands, found itself under the threat of Tsar Ivan IV "the Terrible" as he sought to expand Russian territory to the Baltic Sea. Amidst the Livonian War of 1558-1582, according to Neumann these coins were minted in Wenden (Cesis), the historical seat of the Order in Livonia. They represent desperate measures taken during sieges and military incursions, particularly as the powerful port city of Riga and others valiantly resisted Russian advances. These rare coins are not only currency but also poignant reminders of Livonia's struggle and resilience during a pivotal era. Each piece tells a story of defiance and survival, making them highly valuable to collectors and historians alike.
