In the summer of 1764, Empress Catherine II visited the Baltic region, including Narva, Revel, Riga, and Courland. Duke Ernst Johann von Biron greeted her at the border with his two sons. At the Mitau palace, Biron expressed his gratitude for her visit. Catherine mentioned in a letter to N.I. Panin that the Duke received her warmly upon her return to Riga and even had a medal made for the occasion, distributing money to the people. During the trip, Catherine learned of a conspiracy by Lieutenant V.Ya. Mirovich, resulting in the death of the former emperor Ivan Antonovich on July 5. Catherine returned to St. Petersburg on July 25.
