Dorpat (Bishopric) Æ Schilling, ND – Anonymous (the Time of Livonian War?)

1.68g. F/VF.

Obv.: Shield of Dorpat Arms; •5• above, “+MON… NOVA•TARPA”

Rev.: Arms of Dorpat, “•MONE NOVA•TARPAT”

Haljak 700 var. 6R. Extremely rare.

‘Two different reverses’ type, without the bishop's or other ruler’s name. Emergency issue or contemporary forgery? Haljak dates these coins 1558 and attributes them as an Russian issue of Czar Ivan IV the Terrible in Dorpat.

In 1558, Tartu fell to the Russian army, and by 1571, the German population had been deported to Russia. Remarkably, amidst these tumultuous events, Tartu managed to preserve its minting rights as part of the surrender conditions. As stipulated, all coins were to feature the czar's coat of arms on the obverse side and the coat of arms of Tartu on the reverse. However, to date, only schilling-like copper coins, bearing the Tartu coat of arms on both sides, have been unearthed.
