Surrogate coinage issued in Armavir during the Russian Civil War due to a shortage of small change. Dies were prepared by the Czech-born engraver Iosif Zadler (Austrian POW). Although silver coinage was initially planned, copper was ultimately used because of metal shortages.
The first issue consisted of crude cast pieces; later issues were struck. Total production amounted to approximately 60,000 roubles, mainly in the 3-rouble denomination. Trial silver 3-rouble pieces (10 specimens) are reported. Plans for higher silver (10, 15, 25 roubles) and gold (50, 100 roubles) denominations were never realized.
Minting was interrupted in July 1918 and ceased after Armavir came under White control in September 1918. The White authorities did not recognize these issues. Following the restoration of Soviet power in March 1920, the coins were not effectively redeemed, as inflation rendered their intrinsic metal value higher than their face value.
