Inscription around: ZUR ERINNERUNG AN DEN ERWERB DER INSEL HELGOLAND 9 AUG 1890

(In commemoration of the acquisition of the island of Heligoland, 9 August 1890).

The medal commemorates the acquisition of Heligoland by Germany in 1890 under the Heligoland-Zanzibar Treaty. The United Kingdom ceded the island to the German Empire, strengthening its strategic naval position in the North Sea.
