The German invasion of Belgium in August 1914 marked the opening of the Western Front in World War I. Belgium, though neutral, resisted the advance of German forces, notably during the defense of Liège, which became a symbol of national resistance. These events drew widespread international attention, and support for Belgium became an important element of public sentiment in the Entente countries, including Russia.
