Ernst August (1845–1923), Duke of Cumberland and titular King of Hanover, was the only son of King George V of Hanover and Queen Marie of Saxe-Altenburg. In 1878, he married Princess Thyra of Denmark, the youngest daughter of King Christian IX, in Copenhagen. This dynastic union symbolized the enduring connection between the royal houses of Hanover and Denmark following Hanover's annexation by Prussia. The medal, struck for their silver wedding anniversary in 1903, combines heraldic and floral elements to honor their noble lineage and long-standing marriage.
