The 1981 Central African Games marked the second iteration of the international multi-sport event involving Central African nations. Held in Luanda, Angola, from August 20 to September 2, 1981, the games saw participation from ten countries, encompassing eight sports across a two-week period, and attracted around 1,200 athletes. This event was particularly significant as it was the first multi-sport gathering in Angola since its independence. Rogério Silva, the former head of the Angolan Olympic Committee, acknowledged the games as a pivotal moment for elevating the standard and participation in sports within the country. Following these games, Angola achieved notable success, including winning African championships in basketball and earning multiple medals in handball.
