Obv.: Inside a circular inscription, a bust of Nicholas I facing right, with the engraver's signature В . АЛЕКСѢЕВ . Р . at the bottom.

Rev.: Four-line inscription in Persian, framed by a laurel wreath, beneath the inscription the date 1829 . | АВГ . Д . ;

Translation of the reverse side: "In the month of Sefar, 1245 of his highness Prince Khosrow-Mirza honored with his visit the mint of His Majesty the Emperor of All Russia."

The Persian Prince Khosrow-Mirza was sent to St. Petersburg by the Shah of Iran as a gesture of apology following the assassination in January 1829 in Tehran of the Russian envoy Alexander Griboyedov and members of the Russian mission. This was to avoid war with the Russians and settle the diplomatic scandal. As a gift, he brought with him rich offerings to Nicholas I, including the Shah Diamond (a world-renowned gem, second in value in Russia only to the Orlov Diamond).
